In the course of the European Union Lisbon strategy (up to 2010) as well as the “Europe 2020” strategy, benchmarking became increasingly important in the domain of education. The implementation of the goals set at the European level is evaluated with a range of indicators every year. Headline indicators of the Europe 2020 strategy in the domain of education are for example early leavers from education and training, whose share should decline below 10% across Europe until 2020, and tertiary educational attainment, respectively: By 2020 the share of 30 to 34 year-olds with tertiary educational attainment should be at least 40% across Europe.
The following selection of EU indicators is consequently based on data that are prepared according to the latest version of the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED).
