Strong turnover recovery in industry and construction (+27.6%) for March 2021; turnover still decreased by 3.4% in January 2021

Vienna, 2021-04-30 – The flash estimates for industry and construction (ÖNACE B to F) for March 2021 show an increase of the turnover index (+27.6%), a moderate increase of the index of persons employed (2.3%) and an increase of the index of hours worked (+15.2%) compared to the same month of the previous year, according to calculations by Statistics Austria. However, it must be taken into account that March 2020 was already down by around 10% due to the onset of the Corona pandemic.

"Industry and construction ignite the Corona recovery turbo. Flash estimates for March 2021 show an increase of the turnover index for industry and construction by 27.6% compared to the same month of the previous year - this represents the best performance since Austria's entrance into the European Union. Even the catch-up effects in the course of the economic and financial crisis of 2008/09 were lower. In addition, turnover in industry and construction is now already above the pre-crisis level," says Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

In the reporting period January 2021 a total of 76 626 enterprises in the entire industry and construction sector turned over €21.4 bn (-3.4%). These figures coupled with a slightly decreasing employment (943 507 persons, -0.8%). With €18.8 bn in nominal terms, industrial turnover fell by 3.0% in January 2021 compared to the previous year's month. The 39 989 Austrian construction enterprises achieved a turnover of €2.7 bn in January 2021. This corresponds to a decrease of 6.4% in nominal terms compared to the period of the previous year.

If the industrial and the construction sector are considered separately, the turnover index shows an increase in industry (+27.3%) and in construction there is a positive development as well (+29.2%) to the same month of the previous year. The index of hours worked has an increase in industry (+15.2%), in construction there is a strong positive development (+36.4%). The index of persons employed shows a slight decline in industry (-0.3%) and a positive development in construction (+11.0%).
