Transport volume by rail decreased by 4.9% in 2020

Vienna, 2021-04-21 – In 2020, a total of 97.5 million tonnes of freight was transported on Austria's railway network. This represents a decrease of 4.9% compared to 2019, as Statistics Austria reports. The transport performance (i.e. the product of transport volume and distance) on Austrian territory totalled 20.5 billion tonne-kilometres (tkm) which was 5.7% lower than in 2019.

The impact of the Corona pandemic is clearly reflected in the quarterly results: In the first quarter, 25.9 million tonnes of goods were transported by rail, which represents an increase of 2.6% compared to the same quarter of the previous year (1. quarter 2019: 25.3 million t). In the second quarter of 2020 20.9 million tonnes of goods were transported, a decrease of 19.4% compared to the same quarter of the previous year (2. quarter of 2019: 26.0 million t). In the third quarter, there was a smaller decrease of 6.8% to 23.8 million tonnes (3. quarter 2019: 25.5 million t), while in the fourth quarter there was an increase of 4.1% to 26.9 million tonnes (4. quarter 2019: 25.8 million t). A similar development can also be seen in domestic transport performance.

Broken down by modes of transport, national transport amounted to 26.6 million tonnes, international goods receipt to 24.7 million tonnes, international goods dispatch to 16.2 million tonnes and transit to 30.1 million tonnes. The breakdown of the transport performance was as follows: national transport 4.2 billion tkm, international goods receipt 5.2 billion tkm, international goods dispatch 3.9 billion tkm and transit 7.2 billion tkm.
