– A total of 66 520 enterprises in
the entire industry and construction sector
(+0.6% compared to the previous year) turned over €255.7 bn (-7.7%)
from January to November 2020,
according to calculations by Statistics Austria. The working-day adjusted
turnover for industry and construction decreased by 7.8%. These figures
coupled with a slightly decreasing employment (998 194 persons, -0.5%).
In November 2020 turnover increased by
3.5% compared to the same month of the previous year (working-day adjusted:
+1.8%).
"Despite a 3.5% increase in turnover in November 2020,
Austrian producers are still feeling the effects of the Corona pandemic:
Low turnover in machinery and automotive manufacturing, in the metal
industry and in the energy sector led to a 7.7% decrease in the period
from January to November 2020. According to an flash estimate, the turnover
index for the industry and construction sector also declined by 7.3%
at the beginning of 2021 compared with January 2020", says Statistics Austria
Director General Tobias Thomas.
At establishment level
(67 084 establishments, +0.6%), sold production decreased by 8.1% (working-day
adjusted: -8.2%) in comparison to previous year's level and amounted
to €251.7 bn in nominal terms (employing 997 926 persons, -0.4%). With
€204.7 bn in nominal terms, industrial production sold fell by 9.2%
compared to the previous year. Compared to the same month last year
(November 2019), sold production increased by 3.1% (working-day adjusted:
+1.3%) in industry and construction.
The 36 764 Austrian construction
establishments (+1.0%) achieved a production sold of €47.0 bn in the
reporting period January to November 2020. This corresponds to a decrease
of 3.1% in nominal terms (working-day adjusted: -3.2%) compared to the
previous year. In November 2020 production sold rose by 4.7% (working-day
adjusted: +3.0%).
At the end of November 2020, Austrian construction
companies (not including construction auxiliary trades) had orders
booked totalling about €15.9 bn (+4.4% year-over-year).
The flash estimates
for industry and construction (ÖNACE B to F) for January 2021
show a decrease in the turnover index (-7.3%), a moderate decrease of
the index of persons employed (-1.9%) and a decrease of the index of hours
worked (-7.5%) compared to the same month of the previous year.
If the industrial and the construction sector are
considered separately, the turnover index shows a decrease in industry (-7.3 %)
as well as in construction (-7.5%). The index of hours worked declined
in industry (-7.4%) as well as in construction (-7.4%). The index of index
of persons employed shows a slight decline in industry (-1.9%), construction
also shows a negative development (-1.5%).
