International migration
In 2019, 150 419 immigrations and 109 806
emigrations resulted in an international net migration gain of 40 613 inhabitants. Continuing a longstanding trend, 4 343 more Austrian citizens left the country than emigrated
back to Austria. At the same time, a migration gain of 44 956 people was recorded for foreign citizens in 2019,
which was 12%
higher than in 2018 (+40 017).
Three
quarters of Austria’s net migration gains of foreign citizens
originated from other countries within the European Union or EFTA-States(+33 497), whereas only one quarter were third country nationals (+11 459).
In absolute terms, net migration gains from other countries within the
European Union were comparable to 2018, whereas
net migration gains of third country nationals increased
by 43% (2018: +8 015).
Romanian citizens represented the nationality with the largest net gain
(+8 718), followed by German (+7 227), Hungarian (+4 036),
Croatian (+2 860) and Bulgarian (+2 400)
citizens.
At the regional level, Vienna remained the major destination
of international immigration. In 2018, the
Austrian capital received 35.8%
of all international net-migration gains (+14 526), followed by Upper Austria
(+6 956), Styria (+4 446),
Lower Austria (+3 481)
and Tyrol (+3 414). Within the provinces (NUTS 2), high net-migration
gains were registered in the provincial capitals and their surrounding
regions.
