Austrian labour market second quarter 2019: reduced increase in employment; slightly fewer unemployed

Vienna, 2019-09-11 – Some 4.343 million people living in Austria were in employment during the second quarter of 2019, according to the Labour Force Survey carried out by Statistics Austria. Compared to the second quarter of 2018, the number of employees increased by 25 600, while the numbers of self-employed people and unpaid family workers rose only slightly. The actual rise in the number of employees is reduced compared to rise from the second quarter 2017 to the second quarter 2018 (+51 500).

The number of full-time employees increased by 25 200 year-on-year, while the number of part-time employees remained at the level of the previous year. Both sexes benefited from the increase of full-time employment (women +11 800, men +13 300). Part-time employment remained almost unchanged for women and men. Furthermore, a large extent of the rise in the number of employed people related to the 55 to 59 age group and to persons with high educational level.

During the second quarter of 2019, the number of unemployed people (202 000) was slightly lower than in the previous year (second quarter of 2018: 208 100). This resulted in an unemployment rate of 4.5%, actually being almost at the level of the second quarter of 2018 (4.6%). Especially men benefited from this slight decrease.

Both employment and unemployment data are based on ILO definitions. The results refer to the annual average over all calendar weeks.
