Live births 2018: 30% of babies born by caesarean section, 7% preterm births

Vienna, 2019-06-13 – In 2018, the number of live births in Austria was 84 804, as Statistics Austria reports. The average weight of a new-born girl was 3 255 g, the average length 50.3 cm. New-born boys were a little heavier with 3 379 g and taller with 50.9 cm. The mode of delivery was spontaneous in 63.6% of all live births. Nearly 30% were born with a caesarean section; 14.1% required an emergency caesarean, another 15.3% were elective caesareans. 7.3% of the babies were born preterm.
