Teaching staff at universities
In Austria the higher education system consists of
public universities, private universities, universities of applied science
and university colleges of teacher education.
In the 2019/20 academic year the academic staff at public universities
comprised 41 813 persons. Of these, 2 610 were professors, 2 796 were
equivalents to professors and 36 528 were other scientific and arts
staff. The total proportion of women was 42.0%. It is worth noting that
only 26.0% of professors were women.
In recent years universities of applied science have grown to the second largest
higher education sector in Austria. Overall there were 20 741 teaching
staff members at universities of applied science in the 2018/19 academic
year. The proportion of women amounted to 36.2% and was therefore considerably
lower than at public universities.
The teaching staff at university colleges of teacher education consisted of 6 756
persons in the academic year 2019/20. The share of women was the highest
in the higher education sector, with 60.9%.
In the 2018/19 academic year private universities employed a total of 5 343 persons in teaching.
44.8% of them were women.
