Inflation decreased to 1.9% in December 2018 (HICP: 1.7%)

Vienna, 2019-01-17 – In December 2018, the inflation rate was +1.9%, whereas it had been +2.2% in November, as Statistics Austria reports. Lower price dynamics for fuels and cheaper flight tickets were mainly responsible for the decrease of the December inflation rate. Expenditures for housing, water and energy (+2.3% compared to December 2017) proved to be the most important price driver, followed by expenditures for restaurants and hotels (+2.8%). The index level of the consumer price index 2015 (CPI 2015) was 106.3 in December. Compared to the previous month, the average price level increased by 0.1%.

The index level of the harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP 2015) was 106.74 in December 2018, with the harmonised inflation rate amounting to +1.7%. Thus, for the first time since November 2015, the harmonised inflation rate was lower than the CPI inflation.
