First half of the 2021/22 winter tourism season with almost 20 million nights spent 41.5% below pre-crisis level
Vienna, 2022
"Austria's tourism started the new year with a significant increase in nights spent compared to the previous year. However, the number of nights spent in January 2022 is still more than one third below the pre-crisis level of January 2020. In the first half of the winter tourism season 2021/22, Austria's accommodation establishments recorded 41.5% or 14 million fewer nights spent than in the same period before the Corona crisis. However, the development of the season as a whole also depends crucially on February, which is traditionally the month with the highest number of nights spent in winter due to the semester break," explains Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.
More than 10 million nights spent in January 2022, one third below pre-crisis level
In January 2022, 10.22 million nights spent were registered, significantly more than in the same month of the previous year, when nights spent fell to less than 1 million (0.76 million) due to pandemic-related closures. Compared to the pre-crisis level of January 2020, a decline in nights spent of 36.3% was recorded.
Nights spent by non-resident guests rose to 7.98 million compared to January 2021. 60.8% of these nights spent were accounted for by German guests, 11.3% by Dutch and 3.2% by Belgian guests. Three out of four nights spent in January 2022 were thus attributable to guests from these three countries of origin. Nights spent by non-resident guests are 39.2% below the level of January 2020.
2.24 million nights spent were attributable to guests
from Austria. This corresponds to a fourfold increase compared to 2021,
but is about a quarter
