Strong recovery of turnover in industry and construction (+38,6%) for May 2021; turnover increased by 5.0% compared to May 2019

Vienna, 2021-06-30 – The flash estimates for industry and construction (ÖNACE B to F) by Statistics Austria for May 2021 show an increase of the turnover index (+38.6%), a moderate increase of the index of persons employed (+2.0%) and an increase of the index of hours worked (+13.8%) compared to the same month of the previous year.

"Industry and construction turn out to be economic locomotives in the fading Corona crisis. While the industry turnover was roughly on the same level as in the previous month, construction turnover moved up a gear. Overall, turnover in industry and construction are already above pre-crisis levels and the sector has outgrown the economic Corona crisis," says Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

Considering the industrial and the construction sector separately, the turnover index shows an increase in industry (+41.8%) and a positive development in construction (+24.5%) compared to the same month of the previous year. The index of hours worked increased in industry (+14.3%) as well as in construction (+12.4%). The index of persons employed shows a slight incline in industry (+0.6%) and a positive development in construction (+6.4%).

In the reporting period March 2021, a total of 76 186 enterprises in the entire industry and construction sector turned over €29.8 bn (+24.3%). These figures coupled with a strongly increasing employment (989 484 persons, +4.4%). With €25.0 bn in nominal terms, industrial turnover increased by 23.3% in March 2021 compared to the previous year's month. The 39 705 Austrian construction enterprises achieved a turnover of €4.8 bn in March 2021. This corresponds to an increase of 29.4% in nominal terms compared to the period of the previous year.

In the first quarter of 2021, turnover increased by 9.7% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and amounted to €75.6 bn.
