Tourism summer season 2021 starts with strong increase in overnight stays compared to May 2020, but far below pre-crisis level

Vienna, 2021-06-30 – According to preliminary results from Statistics Austria, 2.92 million nights spent were reported in Austrian accommodation establishments in May 2021. Compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, the number of overnight stays almost quadrupled (+279.3%). This is due to the fact that accommodation establishments have been open again to everyone who has recovered, been tested or vaccinated since 19 May 2021, whereas they were closed for almost the entire month of May 2020 due to Corona. Overnight stays by foreign guests increased by 589.2% to 1.27 million, those by domestic guests by 181.6% to 1.65 million. The number of arrivals in accommodation establishments also increased by 259.1% and amounted to 0.89 million.

"The first month of the 2021 summer season was quite promising with the restart on 19 May. Austrian accommodation establishments recorded 2.92 million nights spent, which is massively more than in the same month of the previous year. However, overnight stays are still around 60% below the pre-crisis level of May 2019," says Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

The 2020 summer season (May to October) closed with a total of 53.83 million overnight stays (non-resident guests: 31.63 million; domestic guests: 22.20 million), by around a third (-31.8%) less than the summer of 2019 (78.97 million). The decline was mainly due to the decrease in overnight stays by guests from abroad (-43.2% or -24.05 million), while the decline in domestic guests was significantly lower (-4.7% or -1.09 million).

Overnight stays in the calendar year to date decreased compared to the previous year

In the current year 2021 (January to May) with 6.66 million 84.4% fewer overnight stays were recorded than in the same period of the previous year, the decline of domestic overnight stays (-50.1% to 4.34 million) was below than that of overnights from abroad (-93.2% to 2.32 million). The number of arrivals (1.69 million) was also well below the level of the previous year (-83.4%).
