Tourism summer season 2021 starts with strong increase in overnight stays compared to May 2020, but far below pre-crisis level
"The first month of the 2021 summer season was quite promising with the restart on 19 May. Austrian accommodation establishments recorded 2.92 million nights spent, which is massively more than in the same month of the previous year. However, overnight stays are still around 60% below the pre-crisis level of May 2019," says Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.
The 2020 summer season (May
to October) closed with a total of 53.83 million overnight stays
(non-resident guests: 31.63 million; domestic guests: 22.20 million),
by around a third
Overnight stays in the calendar year to date decreased compared to the previous year
In the current year 2021
(January to May) with 6.66 million 84.4% fewer overnight stays
were recorded than in the same period of the previous year, the decline
of domestic overnight stays
