Turnover in industry and construction decreased by 8.8% in the period January to October 2020; flash estimates shows partial recovery in industry and construction for December 2020

Vienna, 2021-01-29 – A total of 66 600 enterprises in the entire industry and construction sector (+0.7% compared to the previous year) turned over €228.6 bn (-8.8%) from January to October 2020, according to calculations by Statistics Austria. The working-day adjusted turnover for industry and construction also decreased by 8.8%. These figures coupled with a slightly decreasing employment (1 003 403 persons, -0.8%). In October 2020 turnover decreased by 1.8% compared to the same month of the previous year (working-day adjusted: +2.8%).

"After the Corona-related decline especially in April and May 2020 the development in industry and construction turned positive from Q4 2020 onwards. According to flash estimates, turnover in industry was already 3.6% higher in December 2020 than in December of the previous year, after a rise of 2.8% in November. In construction, the increase was 1.8%," says Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

At establishment level (67 165 establishments, +0.7%), sold production decreased by 9.3% (working-day adjusted: -9.2%) in comparison to previous year's level and amounted to €225.0 bn in nominal terms (employing 1 003 090 persons, -0.8%). With €183.6 bn in nominal terms, industrial production sold fell by 10.4% compared to the previous year. In October 2020, sold production in industry and construction slightly decreased by 2.3% compared to the same month last year (working-day adjusted: +2.3%).

The 36 820 Austrian construction establishments (+1.1%) achieved a production sold of €41.5 bn in the period January to October 2020. This corresponds to a decrease of 4.0% in nominal terms (working-day adjusted also -4.0%) compared to the previous year. In October 2020, production sold fell by 6.2% (working-day adjusted: -2.1%).

At the end of October 2020, Austrian construction establishments (not including construction auxiliary trades) had orders booked totalling about €16.2 bn (+3.5% year-over-year).

Flash estimates for industry and construction (ÖNACE B to F) for December 2020 show an increase of the turnover index (+3.3%), a moderate decrease of the index of persons employed (-0.7%) and a slight decline of the index of hours worked (-0.3%) compared to December 2019.

If the industrial and the construction sector are considered separately, the turnover index shows an increase in industry (+3.6 %) as well as in construction (+1.8%). The index of hours worked slightly declines in industry (-0.5%), while in construction the index shows a lightly increase (+0.7%). The index of index of persons employed shows a slight decline in industry (-1.6%), while construction again shows a positive development (+2.5%).
