In the 2018/19 theatre season, attendance at the federal theatres increased by 3.7% compared to the previous year and lay at 1.35 million, the large private theatres and musical theatres in Vienna recorded a decrease by 13.0% to 1.01 million. Provincial theatres and municipal theatres registered an increase by 2.9% and 1.30 million visits, respectively.
Federal museums recorded a total of 6.92 million visits in 2019,
equating to a 7.3% increase in the number of visitors over the previous
year; provincial
museums recorded 2018 a total of 2.79 million visits
Public libraries reported 0.83 million active readers and 24.0 million loans in 2019; this equates to an increase of 1.8% and 0.9% respectively.
In 2019, the Austrian daily press consisted of 13 newspapers (journalistic units) with 16 additive regional editions (not taking into account dailies for free), while the number of weekly newspapers was 231. All Austrian daily newspapers together reached 60.7% of the population in 2019 (based on the resident population aged 14 and above), which corresponds to a projection of 4.55 million readers. The newspaper that reached by far the highest percentage of the population throughout Austria was the Neue Kronen Zeitung (27.2%). Of the quality newspapers, Der Standard achieved the highest circulation with 6.6%.
The number of radio and television licenses in 2019 was 3.66 million and 3.45 million respectively, which equates to around 90% coverage of households. The total percentage of the population reached daily by radio was (based on the resident population aged 10 and above) 77.3%, those reached by television (based on the resident population aged 12 and above) amounted to 66.4%.
In 2019, the number of cinema visits increased by 5.8% over the previous year to 14.5 million; this equates to 1.6 visits per inhabitant.
