From a demographic perspective, Austria’s population growth can be attributed first and foremost to a positive net migration (balance of immigration and emigration). In comparison, the natural increase (balance of births and deaths) contributes relatively little to overall population growth.
In 2018, Austria’s population increased by about
Even though all federal territories (Länder) experienced a population growth in 2018, marked differences were observed in the composition of the population gain: In Upper Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Vienna, the population increase was the result of net-migration gains and a surplus of births over deaths. In contrast, there was a surplus of deaths over births in Burgenland, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Styria and combined with positive net migration gains which resulted in positive rates of population growth, also in those regions.
