The analysis of commuters gives an overview of the distances covered to reach the place of work or location of school/university.
Commuters are employed persons and pupils or students, who have to travel between their place of residence and their place of work or educational institution. Information about the mode of transport, as well as about how often (daily or not daily) and how long persons are commuting is no longer available because those attributes are not contained in any administrative register.
According to the final results of the Register-based Labour Market Statistics held on 31 October 2018, of the 4 278 316 economically active persons more than half (53.2%) do not work in the municipality they live in. 18.4% work in a different municipality of the same political district, 21.4% in another political district of the same Land, 13.5% in another Land or abroad.
709 941 or 66.0% of the pupils and students attend an educational institution in the municipality of their main residence. 34.0% of the pupils or students do not attend an educational institution in the municipality they live in.
According to the final results of the Register-based Census held on 31 October 2011, of the 3 935 187 economically active persons more than half (53.7%) do not work in the municipality they live in. 18.2% work in a different municipality of the same political district, 21.6% in another political district of the same Land, 12.9% in another Land and 1.0% abroad.
According to the final results of the Register-based Census, 681 493 or 63.0% of the pupils and students attend an educational institution in the municipality of their main residence. A little more than 37.0% of the pupils or students do not attend an educational institution in the municipality they live in.
