Vienna, 2020-07-16 – In 2019, 46 034 marriages and 1 269 registered partnerships were concluded, according to final results of Statistics Austria. Compared to 2018, the number of marriages decreased by 0.9% and the number of registered partnerships was nearly three times higher than the year before (+173.5%).

Since 1 January 2019, marriage in Austria is also recognized for same-sex couples as well as registered partnerships for mixed-sex couples. Consequently, 997 same-sex marriages and 1 135 mixed-sex registered partnerships were forged as well as 193 conversions of registered partnerships into marriages.

69.5% of all marriages in 2019 were first marriages for both partners (2018: 69.3%). The median age at first marriage in 2019 was 33.0 years for men and 30.8 years for women (2018: men 32.8, women 30.6).
