Families 2018: 80% live in a nuclear family

Vienna, 2019-04-04 – In 2018, the Austrian Labour Force Survey registered 3 916 000 households, as Statistics Austria reports. Among them, there were 2 319 000 single family households, 58 000 multi-family households and 83 000 non-family multi-person households. 1 457 000 Austrian residents were living alone. 80% of the total population in private households were living in a nuclear family.

Between 1988 and 2018, the number of private households increased by 37% from 2 849 000 to 3 916 000. In the same period, the population in private households only grew by 16% (1988: 7 500 000; 2018: 8 679 000). Hence, the rising number of households was only partly triggered by population growth. A large part of this development was caused by the rapid growth of single person households, which increased from 786 000 in 1988 to 1 457 000 in 2018, representing 17% of the total population in private households. This increase also had an effect on the average household size: In 1988, there were 2.63 people living in a household, while in 2018, only 2.22 people inhabited an average household.
