Austrian labour market third quarter of 2019: unemployment continues to decline; more part-time employment again

Vienna, 2019-12-11 – Some 4.391 million people living in Austria were in employment during the third quarter of 2019, according to the Labour Force Survey carried out by Statistics Austria. Compared to the third quarter of 2018, the number of employees increased by 10 500, and the numbers of self-employed people and unpaid family workers rose by 15 100. Overall, the employment rate of 15- to 64-year-olds slightly rose by 0.4 percentage points to 74.2%.

The number of part-time employees increased by 21 000 compared to the third quarter of 2018, mainly due to a rise among women. In contrast, the number of full-time employees decreased by 10 500.

During the third quarter of 2019, the number of unemployed people (203 600) was lower than in the third quarter of 2018 (226 000). This resulted in an unemployment rate of 4.4%, which is slightly below the third quarter of 2018 (4.9%). Especially women benefited from this decrease.

Both employment and unemployment data are based on ILO definitions. The results refer to the annual average over all calendar weeks.
