The figures stated below refer to the “Austrian health interview survey 2014“.
In Austria 2.0 million women and 1.5 million men took prescription medicines in the two weeks prior to the survey. The consumption of medicines increased with age, particularly among women. While a bit more than a fifth of people aged between 15 to 29 years (22%) took prescription medicines, nine out of ten persons aged 75 years and more consumed medicines prescripted by a medic. Women of all age groups took more prescription medicines on average than men.
1.5 million woman (40%) and 1,0 million men took non-prescription medicines in the two weeks prior to the survey. The influence of age on consumption of non-prescription medicines was low, the frequency of consumption was slightly increased in younger people.
