In the 2018/19 winter semester, 277 660 Austrians (no doublecounts) were studying at tertiary educational institutions as either regular students or students of courses of studies (Lehrgang). A total of 193 127 Austrian students were pursuing regular studies at public universities. The 13 private universities had 6 467 Austrian regular students. 43 725 regular students with Austrian citizenship were studying at a university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule). 13 438 Austrians were enrolled at university colleges of teacher education and 142 domestic regular students were enrolled at three schools of theology.
99 040 foreign students were studying in Austria in the winter semester 2018/19. At public universities 28% of all regular students were foreign citizens while 44% of students at private universities were not Austrian citizens. The proportion of foreign students at universities of applied sciences was 18%, at university colleges of teacher education 8%. At theological schools 57% of the regular students were foreign citizens. The majority of foreign students came from Europe. 71% of foreign students were EU citizens, another 16% citizens of other European states.
In the winter semester 2018/19, the proportion of women among regular domestic students at the public universities was 53%. The number of women as a proportion of the total number of Austrian regular students at private universities was 62%. At universities of applied sciences 50% of regular students were female, at university colleges of teacher education 74%. At schools of theology 39% of regular students were female.
The most frequented studies at public universities were humanities, science and technology. Private universities focused on humanities, medicine, economics and social sciences and arts. Universities of applied sciences specialized in engineering and business administration.
