School attendance

A total of 1 132 367 students were enrolled in Austria’s schools during the 2017/18 school year. Because of the decrease of the birth rate from the mid-1990s the number of pupils attending primary schools (Volksschulen) and secondary schools (Sekundarstufe I) has been falling consistently for some years. However, due to migration from 2015 to 2017 the number of pupils is increasing again.

In the 2017/18 school year 339 382 pupils were attending primary schools in Austria. That is an increase of 3 528 (1.1%) in comparison to the previous year. Due to migration movement from 2015 to 2017 a large proportion of the increase are non-regular students (a temporary status for pupils, who cannot follow the language in which lessons are conducted; the non-regular student status is valid for 24 months at most). In a ten year comparison there was an increase of 1 448 (0.4%) pupils in primary schools. Under consideration of the population forecast this trend of increase will continue for the next ten years.

In general- and new secondary schools (Hauptschulen and Neue Mittelschulen) the number of students decreased to 207 898, which is the lowest figure in more than 50 years. Meanwhile secondary academic schools (AHS-Unterstufe) reached their highest number of attendances (119 591) ever.

A total of 143 544 pupils were enrolled in secondary technical and vocational colleges (BHS), that is a decrease of 1.0% compared to ten years ago (144 987). 63 152 students attended crafts, technical and arts colleges, which was a slight decrease after its highest level in the 2015/16 school year. There was also a decrease in the number of attendances in colleges of business administration (37 083 pupils in 2017/18; -15.5% compared to 2007/2008) and in colleges of management and the service industries (26 496; -6.1%). Whereas the number of students in colleges of agriculture and forestry (3 910; +7.4%) increased.

The number of students enrolled in second-stage secondary academic schools (AHS-Oberstufe), including work-related types of school, increased by 5.0% over the last ten years and reached a number of 92 193.
