According to the legal framework a survey on the rolling stock of Austrian based railway operating companies and integrated railway companies as well as on the length of the Austrian railway network operated by Austrian based infrastructure managers or integrated railway companies were conducted.
Austrian based railway operating companies and integrated railway companies were vehicle keeper of a total of 1 287 locomotives (reference date: December 31 2020) out of which 907 were electric locos, 356 used diesel and the rest used other sources of power. There were further 719 railcars (523 electric, 196 diesel railcars) and 84 electric motorised trains, 2 322 passenger wagons as well as 17 511 freight wagons. In Austria were 2 020 motor vehicles registered thereof 1 273 locomotives, 672 railcars and 75 electric motorised trains.

Referring to the respective track gauge 5 350 km (construction length) and 5 236 km (operated length) corresponded to the ESG (European Standard Gauge) of 1 435 mm while 380 km (construction length) and 371 km (operated length) were narrow gauge lines.
