According to the legal framework a survey on the rolling stock of Austrian based railway operating companies and integrated railway companies as well as on the length of the Austrian railway network operated by Austrian based infrastructure managers or integrated railway companies were conducted.
Austrian based railway operating companies and integrated railway companies were vehicle keeper of a total of 1 206 locomotives (reference date: December 31 2018) out of which 824 were electric locos, 362 used diesel and the rest used other sources of power. There were further 709 railcars (516 electric, 193 diesel railcars) and 92 electric motorised trains, 1 806 passenger wagons as well as 18 242 freight wagons. In Austria were 1 987 motor vehicles registered thereof 1 198 locomotives, 697 railcars and 92 electric motorised trains.

Referring to the respective track gauge 5 341 km (construction length) and 5 225 km (operated length) corresponded to the ESG (European Standard Gauge) of 1 435 mm while 309 km (construction length) and 301 km (operated length) were narrow gauge lines.
