Inland waterway transport

A total of 8.5 million tonnes (t) of goods was hauled as freight transport on the Austrian section of the Danube in the year 2019. Compared to 2018, this was an increase of 1.3 million t resp. 25.1%. The total transport performance (i.e. the product of transport volume and distance travelled) was 8.4 billion-tonne kilometres (tkm) and therefore by 1.4 million tkm (20.7%) higher than in 2018. Around 1.7 billion tkm (15.2%) of this transport performance took place on the Austrian section of the Danube.

The international goods receipt gained 10.5% to 4.2 million t, the international goods dispatch rose by 27.1% to 2.3 million t compared to the previous year. For transit through Austria an increase of 33.2% to 1.8 million t was reported. The inland transport was reduced by 8.3% to 0.3 million t in the reference year.

In 2019 waterside trans-shipments by all ports on the Austrian section of the Danube rose by 13.6% to 7.0 million t.
