Almost one third fewer one-day registrations of passenger cars in the first quarter of 2020

Vienna, 2020-04-20 – 2 462 passenger cars were registered and deregistered within one day between January and March 2020, as Statistics Austria reports. Compared to the first quarter of 2019 with 3 488 one-day registrations, this represents a decrease of 29.4%. The highest decline compared to the same month last year was recorded in March 2020 (-69.3%). In January, 16.1% fewer cars were registered for one day, while in February one-day registrations increased by 31.2%.

The share of one-day registrations related to total new passenger car registrations was 4.5% in the first quarter of 2020 (January to March 2019: 4.3%).

The number of short-term registrations of passenger cars up to seven days declined by 36.0%, registrations up to 30 days and 60 days fell by 37.7% and 37.4%, respectively. New passenger car registrations up to 90 days (-33.4%) and up to 120 days (-29.4%) also decreased.

Information on methods, definitions: Motor vehicle statistics (registrations of new and used vehicles as well as the stock of vehicles) are secondary statistics, compiled on the basis of daily data files sent to Statistics Austria by Austria’s association of insurance companies (VVO). VVO, in turn, receives data by the insurances’ registrations offices, responsible for registrations, de-registrations and rectifications of motor vehicles and trailers.  
Within motor vehicle statistics, all motor vehicles, once nationally or internationally registered, are levied, irrespective of the registration’s duration.
