In 2017, the year under review, the
Structural Business Statistics provides important indicators concerning the structure, activities, employment, investment activities and performance of enterprises at national and regional levels in the breakdown by economic activities in accordance with ÖNACE 2008. Important underlying data is also provided for calculating the gross domestic product in the context of the System of National and Regional Accounts, input-output tables and economic forecasts.

The comparison with the results of the previous year
shows that the enterprises of the manufacturing and service sector achieved
a growth of persons employed
The comparison of industries and construction with trade and services (see chart “Industry, construction and trade, services 2017 in comparison”) revealed that while just over four fifths (80.3%) of enterprises operated in the services branches, the share of persons employed was 66.4%. In terms of the gross value added at factor costs, industries and construction accounted for 39.6% and the services sector for 60.4%, while more than two-thirds (70.0%) of total investment and 62.1% of turnover was made in the services sector.
Results by aggregated economic activities show, that more than half of enterprises (56.9%) operated in services (without trade). They accounted for 43.5% of persons employed and 42.7% of value added at factor costs. Indeed the lowest shares of enterprises were measured for industry and construction (9.0% and 10.7 %) – but measured in terms of production value, industry with a share of 45.2% accounted for a quite higher share than construction with only 9.7%. About a quarter of enterprises (23.4%) were active in trade. With 22.5% of persons employed they achieved the highest share of turnover (33.6%), followed by industry (31.5%) and services with 28.5%.
The results according to the size
classes of persons employed reflect the structure of the Austrian
economy, which is predominantly characterised by small businesses. For
the reporting year 2017, it emerged that

Establishment results for Austria as a whole and for
each federal province are also available alongside the results at enterprise
Regulation (EC) No. 295/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 March 2008 concerning structural business statistics (recast) is the legal basis for compiling structural business statistics on European level by the classification of economic activities (NACE Rev. 2) from the reference year 2008 onwards.
The Regulation concerning structural business statistics is the basis for the collection of structural business statistics data on all market activities, as covered by Sections B to N and division 95 of ÖNACE 2008 beginning with the reference year 2008 according to national SBS regulation.
