International trade in goods in May 2021: over 30% more imports and exports in comparison to the weak results in May 2020; imports +34.1%, exports +31.5%

Vienna, 2021-08-04 – The value of imports of goods was at €13.85 bn in May 2021, an increase of 34.1% compared to May 2020, according to preliminary results by Statistics Austria. At the same time, exports of goods rose by 31.5% to €12.98 bn. The balance of trade thus showed a deficit of €0.87 bn. Working-day adjusted, the rates of increase were 33.8% for imports and 31.4% for exports. The strong increases are again related to the low level of international trade in goods (ITGS) in May 2020. It was the second reporting month with a continuous lockdown in Austria due to COVID-19.

The four most important product groups for international trade in goods are machinery and transport equipment, manufactured goods, chemicals and related products and miscellaneous manufactured articles. Aggregated they showed an import growth of 32.4% to €11.06 bn and their exports rose by 31.2% to €10.92 bn. The highest absolute growth in exports was recorded with machinery and transport equipment (+32.6%) followed by manufactured goods (+39.0%).
