Surveys for Transportation on Rail, Aviation and Inland Water Ways

The Surveys for Transportation on Rail, Aviation and Inland Water Ways were included in the response burden barometer for the first time in 2010.

Rail transport

The surveys in the field of rail transport statistics relate to all domestic and foreign railway companies operating rail transport on Austria’s sovereign territory. The deregulation measures implemented within the European Union and the resulting statutory and organisational changes in the rail sector strongly influence the development of rail transport in Austria. Detailed statistical data is available to all interested parties and decision makers, in particular on the transport volume and the transport performance in total and by types of transport (inland transport, international goods receipt and dispatch, transit), as well as on passenger transport and accidents.

Civil aviation

The survey scope of civil aviation in Austria covers commercial aviation (scheduled and non-scheduled transport) and general aviation. The results provide an insight into the developments in civil aviation in Austria, which represents an important economic factor. If one takes into account all the enterprises involved in providing civil aviation services, including all the upstream and downstream stages, the relevant driving forces for employment and local value added can be determined.

Inland waterway transport

Inland waterway transport is widely regarded as an eco-friendly mode of transporting especially large volumes of freight. The inland waterway survey covers the transport performance of domestic and foreign vessels transporting freight on the Danube waterway, which links Austria with the European waterway network. Detailed statistical data is available to the interested public and the decision makers covering in particular the number of laden ships, the transport volume and the transport performance, separated to domestic and foreign ships as well as to types of transport (inland transport, international goods receipt and dispatch, transit).

In 2019 the response time for all three surveys amounted to 1 510 hours, compared with 1 482 hours in 2018.
