Survey on Road Freight Transportation

In the year 2019 the response burden amounted to 15 060 hours, an increase of 3.5 per cent to 2018 (14 552).

Development of response burden in the years 2001-2019

In 2006 a new sample design became effective for the Survey on Road Freight Transportation. According to the old sample design registered keepers of motor vehicles were asked to provide information for one reference week once in four years (load capacity class 1), for one reference week once a year (load capacity class 2) or for one reference week per quarter respectively (load capacity class 3), depending on the total load capacity of their vehicles. Once selected in the sample a registered keeper of a motor vehicle had to provide information for all vehicles.

The new sample design differs from the one described above only in the respect that now the registered keeper has to provide information not for all vehicles but only for a sample of vehicles.

As a consequence of the new sample design the number of reports declined considerably also affecting the response burden, which fell by 84 percent from 2005 to 2006.

In 2017 the sampling for the evaluation of the response burden was updated. Instead of a constant sample of units reporting on paper interviewed by telephone, a separate question about the response burden has been included directly on the respective questionnaire starting in 2016.
