Transport volume by rail increased by 4.8% in 2021

Vienna, 2022-04-21 – In 2021, a total of 102.2 million tonnes of freight was transported on Austria's railway network. This represented an increase of 4.8% compared to 2020, as Statistics Austria reports. The transport performance (i.e. the product of transport volume and distance) on Austrian territory totalled 21.8 billion tonne-kilometres (tkm) which was 6.3% higher than in 2020. This means that the transport volume and the transport performance almost corresponded with the values of the last year before the Corona pandemic (2019: 102.6 million tonnes respective 21.7 billion tkm).

Broken down by modes of transport, national transport amounted to 28.5 million tonnes, international goods receipt to 24.9 million tonnes, international goods dispatch to 17.5 million tonnes and transit to 31.3 million tonnes. The breakdown of the transport performance was as follows: national transport 4.3 billion tkm, international goods receipt 5.6 billion tkm, international goods dispatch 4.0 billion tkm and transit 7.9 billion tkm.
