Freight transport volume on the river Danube increased by 0.3% in 2021

Vienna, 2022-03-30 – According to Statistics Austria, a total of 8.3 million tonnes (t) of goods was transported on the Austrian section of the Danube in 2021. Compared to 2020 (8.2 million tonnes), this means a small increase of 0.3% but still is the third lowest transport volume since 1995.

The total transport performance (i.e. the product of transport volume and distance travelled) was 7.4 billion tonne-kilometres (tkm) and therefore by 0.1 billion tkm (-1.5%) lower than in 2020. A decrease has also been reported for the number of transportations by 1.1% resp. 85 to 7 986.

For international goods dispatch a growth by 17.7% to 2.4 million tonnes was reported and inland transport rose by 27.1% to 0.8 million tonnes. Transit through Austria was reduced by 27.6% to 1.2 million tonnes and the international goods receipt decreased by 1.5% to 3.9 million tonnes.
