More marriages (+1.3%) and fewer divorces (-4.8%) in 2021 than in the previous year

Vienna, 2022-02-15 – According to provisional results from Statistics Austria, 40 195 marriages took place in Austria in 2021, 533 or 1.3% more than in 2020, but 5 839 or 12.7% fewer than in 2019. In the same period, 1 383 registered partnerships were established, which is 127 or 10.1% more than in the previous year and 114 or 9.0% more than in 2019.

Furthermore, 14 156 divorces took place in 2021, 714 or 4.8% less than in the previous year and 2 163 or 13.3% less than in 2019. At the same time, 111 registered partnerships were dissolved by court decision, three or 2.8% more than in 2020 and ten or 8.3% less than in the pre-Corona year 2019.

"Corona-related restrictions also thwarted many private plans in the second pandemic year: although slightly more couples got married in 2021 than in the year before, there were 12.7% fewer compared to the pre-Corona year 2019. However, 13.3% fewer marriages were divorced than in 2019, and compared to 2020, there were 4.8% fewer divorces," says Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.
