4 827 fewer births than deaths in 2021; number of births increased by 2.4% compared to 2020

Vienna, 2022-02-15 – In 2021, according to preliminary results from Statistics Austria, the number of live births amounted to 85 607. This corresponds to an increase of 2.4% compared to 2020 or an increase of 0.8% compared to 2019, i.e. before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the same period, a total of 90 434 people died, 1.3% less than in the previous year, but 8.5% more than in 2019. This resulted in a natural population decrease of 4 827 and corresponded to ten births and ten deaths per 1 000 inhabitants.

"In 2021, the number of births increased by 2.4% compared to the previous year. There were also slightly more children born in Austria than in the pre-Corona year 2019. Nevertheless, Austria's birth balance in 2021 was negative: 85 607 newborns contrasted to 90 434 deceased, which makes a birth deficit of 4 827", explains Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

In 2021, 229 children died under one year of age. This translated into a provisional infant mortality rate of 2.7‰.
