Turnover in industry and construction for September 2021 significantly above pre-crisis level (+21.4%); transport volume in road freight transport increased in the third quarter of 2021

Vienna, 2021-10-28 – The flash estimates for industry and construction (ÖNACE B to F) by Statistics Austria for September 2021 show an increase of the turnover index (+20.0%), a moderate increase of the index of persons employed (+1.4%) and an increase of the index of hours worked (+3.6%) compared to the same month of the previous year.

"Austria's industry and construction sector continues to prove itself as economic locomotive and was even able to move up a gear in September 2021. Turnover was significantly 21.4% above the pre-crisis level of September 2019, meaning that industry and construction only see the economic Corona crisis in the rear-view mirror," said Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

Considering the industrial and the construction sector separately, the flash estimates for September 2021 show a strong recovery of the turnover index in industry (+22.8%) and in construction (+6.6%) compared to the same month of the previous year. The index of hours worked increased in industry (+3.3%) as well as in construction (+4.6% compared to September 2020). The index of persons employed shows a slight incline in industry (+0.7%) and a positive development in construction (+3.2%).

In the reporting period July 2021, a total of 75 813 enterprises in the entire industry and construction sector turned over €29.4 bn (+18.7%). These figures coupled with a slightly increasing employment (1 019 521 persons, +1.3%). With €23.9 bn in nominal terms, industrial turnover increased by 21.3% in July 2021 compared to the previous year's month. The 39 427 Austrian construction enterprises achieved a turnover of €5.4 bn in July 2021. This corresponds to an increase of 8.3% in nominal terms compared to July 2020.

For the third quarter of 2021 the flash estimates for road freight transport by vehicles registered in Austria showed an increase by 4.4% to 113.2 million tonnes (t). A growth compared to the same period of the preceding year was also registered in the total transport performance on Austrian and foreign territory (7.0 billion tonne-kilometres (tkm)) by 0.9% and in the number of laden journeys (8.0 million) by 4.4%.

The transport performance within Austria rose by 0.5% to 5.1 billion tkm (3rd quarter 2020: 5.1 billion tkm), whereas outside Austria it augmented by 2.3% to 1.9 billion tkm (3rd quarter 2020: 1.8 billion tkm).
