Press release: 12.533-124/21

Tourism winter season 2020/21 registered a decrease in nights spent of 90,7% to 5.57 million

Vienna, 2021-05-28 – In the winter season 2020/21 (November 2020 to April 2021) Austrian accommodation establishments registered 5.57 million nights spent, 54.44 million fewer than in the same period of the previous year, as preliminary results from Statistics Austria show. There was also a correspondingly high decrease in the number of arrivals of 92.7% to 1.16 million compared to the previous season.

"Between November 2020 and April 2021, Austrian accommodation establishments recorded a 90.7% drop in nights spent. Official closures of accommodation establishments during the entire winter season 2020/21 cost Austrian winter tourism 54.44 million nights spent, with a total of only 5.57 million overnight stays. In the last winter season 2018/19, which was not influenced by the pandemic, 72.92 million nights spent were registered", said Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

April nights spent are higher than in the same month last year

The number of nights spent significantly recovered in April 2021, compared to April 2020. With 1.05 million nights spent, four times as many nights spent as in April 2020 were registered. This is primarily due to the fact that in April 2021 there were more far-reaching exemptions in the entry ban for accommodation providers than during the comparatively stricter lockdown in the previous year. Compared to April 2019 when 8.28 million nights spent were registered the decrease was 87.4%.
