Strong turnover recovery in industry and construction (+46.0%) for April 2021; turnover increased by 7.2% in February 2021

Vienna, 2021-05-28 – The flash estimates for industry and construction (ÖNACE B to F) for April 2021 show an increase of the turnover index (+46.0%), a moderate increase of the index of persons employed (+2.5%) and an increase of the index of hours worked (+20.7%) compared to the same month of the previous year, according to calculations by Statistics Austria.

"Flash estimates for industry and construction show a strong turnover recovery for April 2021. The turnover index increased by 46.0% compared to the - admittingly poor - same month of the previous year. This is the best performance since Austria's entrance into the European Union. Furthermore, the available turnover data for February 2021 indicate the economic turnaround," said Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

Considering the industrial and the construction sector separately, the turnover index shows an increase in industry (+47.1%). In construction there is a positive development as well (+40.6%) compared to the same month of the previous year. The index of hours worked has an increase in industry (+17.7%), in construction there is a strong positive development (+30.2%). The index of persons employed shows a slight incline in industry (+0.5%) and a positive development in construction (+8.9%).

In the reporting period February 2021, a total of 76 002 enterprises in the entire industry and construction sector turned over €24.4 bn (+7.2%). These figures coupled with a slightly decreasing employment (958 067 persons, -0.3%). With €21.0 bn in nominal terms, industrial turnover increased by 8.1% in February 2021 compared to the previous year's month. The 39 594 Austrian construction enterprises achieved a turnover of €3.4 bn in February 2021. This corresponds to an increase of 1.8% in nominal terms compared to the period of the previous year.
