Number of deaths increases again slightly

Vienna, 2021-05-06 – According to preliminary results by Statistics Austria, 1 706 people died in Austria in calendar week 16 (from 19 to 25 April 2021), which was 17 more than in the previous week.

"The number of weekly deaths increased in calendar week 16 for the second time in a row in 2021. Mortality was thus 10.7% above the average value of the same calendar week of the five previous years 2016 to 2020. Similar values had last occurred in mid-January," said Tobias Thomas, Director General of Statistics Austria.

Further information on deaths can be found on our website, where an interactive web application – the Atlas of Deaths – also graphically illustrates the development and regional distribution. Detailed results can be found in Statistics Austria's open data repository.
