About one forth more used passenger cars in first quarter 2021; registrations of used two-wheelers also recorded significant increases

Vienna, 2021-04-16 – In the first quarter of 2021, 214 133 used passenger cars were registered, 24.2% more than in the same period of the previous year, as Statistics Austria reports. Compared to the corresponding pre-crisis period of 2019, the increase was 3.6%. In January 2021, a decrease (-19.5%) was observed, while used passenger car registrations developed positively in February (+6.2%) and particulary in March (+131.7%).

"Registrations of used passenger cars increased significantly again in March 2021, reaching a plus of 131.7% compared to March of the previous year, when significantly fewer used cars were purchased due to the lockdown. In the entire 1st quarter of 2021, the number of used passenger car registrations rose by 24.2% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and was even 3.6% above the level of the 1st quarter of 2019," said Statistik Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

Compared to first quarter of 2020, used diesel-driven passenger cars (share: 60.0%; +21.5%) as well as used petrol-driven cars (incl. flex-fuel; share: 36.2%; +22.8%) recorded more registrations. Alternatively fuelled passenger cars reached a share of 3.8% of all used passenger car registrations and increased by 135.0%.

All of the top 10 passenger cars recorded increases in used registrations in the first quarter of 2021: BMW +33.9%, Seat +31.3%, Mercedes +29.9%, Skoda +26.1%, VW +25.4%, Audi +24.8%, Ford +18.4%, Peugeot +17.2%, Opel +12.1% and Renault +12.0%.

29.9% fewer motor vehicles from January to March 2021

From January to March 2021, 263 489 used motor vehicles were registered, 29.9% more than in the same period of the previous year.

Among commercial vehicles, the used registrations of tractors for agriculture and forestry (+51.7%), lorries of category (cat.) N1 (+34.7%), articulated lorries (+5.2%) and lorries cat. N3 (+2.2%) developed positively, while declines were observed for lorries cat. N2 (-5.3%).

For two-wheelers, more used motorcycles (+126.5%) and scooters (+94.7%) were registered compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

Information on methods, definitions: Motor vehicle statistics (registrations of new and used vehicles as well as the stock of vehicles) are secondary statistics, compiled on the basis of daily data files sent to Statistics Austria by Austria’s association of insurance companies (VVO). VVO, in turn, receives data by the insurances’ registrations offices, responsible for registrations, de-registrations and rectifications of motor vehicles and trailers. 
Within motor vehicle statistics, all motor vehicles, once nationally or internationally registered, are levied, irrespective of the registration’s duration.
