– The coronavirus pandemic had a considerable impact on vacant positions
in Austria: According to Statistics Austria, enterprises reported an
annual average of 102 600 job vacancies in 2020, which represents a decrease
of 20% compared to the previous year. In 2019, there was an annual average
of 128 200 job vacancies (+7% compared to 2018). This is the first time
there was a statistically significant decline since the beginning of
the time series in 2009.
In terms of economic sectors, the strongest decrease
in vacant positions was recorded in the service sector with -21.9%,
followed by the production sector (-17.7%) and the public sector (-16.0%).
The job vacancy rate has declined from 3.0% to 2.6%. The search duration
shortened slightly in comparison to the previous years: Approximately
half of the vacancies (52.1%) were advertised for less than three months
(2019: 47.2%); about one-fifth (22.0%) were permanent postings (2019: 26.7%).
