8 996 new Austrian citizens in 2020, number of naturalisations decreased by 15.2%

Vienna, 2021-02-12 – In 2020, 8 996 persons acquired Austrian citizenship (including 200 residents abroad), as Statistics Austria reports. Compared to 2019, the number of naturalisations decreased by 15.2%. After an all-time high in 2003 (45 112), the number of naturalisations dropped to a minimum in 2010 (6 190). From 2011 to 2019, naturalisations increased constantly, before dropping again in 2020.

In 2020, Austrian citizenship was granted to 3 188 persons born in Austria (35.4%). Among people naturalised in 2020, the largest groups were former citizens of Bosnia-Herzegovina (967 or 10.7%), Serbia (943 or 10.5%), Turkey (847 or 9.4%). 4 856 (54.0%) of the naturalised persons were women and 4 140 (46.0%) men, 2 991 (33.2%) were under 18 years of age.
