Press release: 12.404-244/20
Vienna, 2020-12-21
– In 2020, 5.67 million tonnes of cereals (incl. grain maize) were
harvested in Austria, according to final results by Statistics Austria.
This means an increase by 5% to 2019 and by 10% compared to the ten-year
average. The long period of dryness in spring was largely compensated
by the following rainy period which started in May. Many field crops
benefited from it.
For grain maize, the yield reached the highest value
in the last ten years. Dry pulses and oilseeds achieved a production
of 432 000 tonnes, which was 4% less than in 2019.
The area of root crops – sugar beets in particular
– was reduced again. Nevertheless, this product group is expected
to reach a surplus of 11% compared to the previous year (-21% compared
to the ten-year average) with prospectively 3.01 million tonnes due to
high yields, especially for potatoes.
