Turnover in industry and construction decreased by 5.5% in August 2020; January to August 2020 -11.1%; flash estimates for October 2020 show year-on-year decrease in industry

Vienna, 2020-11-30 – A total of 66 674 enterprises in the entire industry and construction sector (+1.1% compared to the previous year) turned over €175.8 bn (-11.1%) from January to August 2020, according to calculations by Statistics Austria. The working-day adjusted turnover for industry and construction decreased also by 11.1%. These figures coupled with a slightly decreasing employment (1 004 981 persons, -0.5%). In August 2020, turnover decreased by 5.5% compared to the same month of the previous year (working-day adjusted: -5.1%).

At establishment level (67 239 establishments, +1.1%), sold production decreased by 11.5% (working-day adjusted: -11.6%) in comparison to previous year's level and amounted to €173.1 bn in nominal terms (employing 1 004 565 persons, -0.4%). With €142.0 bn in nominal terms, industrial production sold fell by 12.9% compared to the previous year. Compared to the same month last year (August 2019), sold production declined by 6.0% (working-day adjusted: also -5.6%) in industry and construction.

The 36 804 Austrian construction establishments (+1.6%) achieved a production sold of €31.1 bn in the period January to August 2020. This corresponds to a decrease of 4.6% in nominal terms (working-day adjusted: -4.7%) compared to the previous year. In August 2020, production sold fell by 2.5% (working-day adjusted: -2.1%).

At the end of August 2020, Austrian construction companies (not including construction auxiliary trades) had orders booked totalling about €16.6 bn (+2.6% year-over-year).

The flash estimates of Statistics Austria for industry and construction (ÖNACE B to F) for October 2020 show a decrease in the turnover index (-4.6%), the index of persons employed (-0.5%) and the index of hours worked (-7.3%) compared to the same month of the previous year.

If the industrial sector is considered separately from construction, the turnover index shows a decline in industry (-3.9%) as well as in construction (-7.7%). The index of hours worked also decreases in industry (-8.0%) as well as in construction (-5.5%). The index of hours worked shows a slight decline in industry (-1.4%), while construction again shows a positive development (+1.9%).
