World Statistics Day 2020: new Economic Monitor provides overview of economic development in Austria

Vienna, 2020-10-19 – On the occasion of World Statistics Day on 20 October on the topic "Connecting the world with data we can trust", Statistics Austria presents the new Economic Monitor providing an overview of the economic development in Austria.

More than 80 economic indicators from the labour market, industry and construction, trade and services, foreign trade, prices, tourism, transport and national accounts are bundled and made available. The Economic Monitor thus enables the comparison of different economic sectors. For example, it can be read off, that

• overnight stays in Austria decreased during the lockdown far more than any other economic indicator and despite of the recovery in July there is still a decline of 17% in annual comparison;

• since May 2020, employment in construction has again developed positively (May 2020: +0.1%, July 2020: + 2.0% compared to the previous year's month), while employment in industry has still not reached the previous year's level (July 2020: -1.7% compared to July 2019);

• following sharp declines in spring (April 2020: -22% in annual comparison), production in industry is likely to ease in July 2020 with -4.3% compared to the same month of the previous year;

• turnover in retail trade has developed positively since May 2020 (July 2020: +5.8% compared to July 2019), while turnover in total trade is still below the previous year's results (July 2020: -1.9% compared to the same month last year).
