More than one third fewer one-day registrations of passenger cars in the period January to September 2020

Vienna, 2020-10-19 – In the first nine months of this year, 7 850 passenger cars were registered and deregistered within one day, according to Statistics Austria. This is 37.8% less than in the period from January to September 2019, when 12 622 passenger cars were registered for one day. One-day registrations accounted for 4.3% of total new passenger car registrations in the period from January to September 2020, and for 4.9% in the same period last year.

At the beginning of the year, one-day registrations initially fell (January 2020 -16.1%) and increased again in February (+31.2%) compared to the same month of the previous year. After partly massive declines in March (-69.3%), April (-73.7%), May (-34.2%), June (-42.0%), July (-27.1) and August (-65.8), one-day registrations of passenger cars recorded a solid increase again in September 2020 (+30.4% compared to September 2019). The increase already observed for total new passenger car registrations in September 2020 is mainly due to advance purchases because of the changes in the engine-related insurance tax effective from 1 October. With a share of 6.9% of total new registrations, one-day registrations reached a peak in the current year 2020.

New passenger car registrations with a registration period of up to seven days decreased by 42.8% from January to September 2020, while those with a registration period of up to 30 days decreased by 46.3%. New passenger car registrations with a registration period of up to 60 days (-47.2%), up to 90 days (-43.7%) and up to 120 days (-40.3%) also fell.

Information on methods, definitions: Motor vehicle statistics (registrations of new and used vehicles as well as the stock of vehicles) are secondary statistics, compiled on the basis of daily data files sent to Statistics Austria by Austria’s association of insurance companies (VVO). VVO, in turn, receives data by the insurances’ registrations offices, responsible for registrations, de-registrations and rectifications of motor vehicles and trailers. The motor vehicle statistics, therefore, basically contains all registration data, regardless of the duration of the registration.
A short-term registration is a new car registration that will be de-registered within a certain period. A new car registration with a registration period of up to seven days means that the car is de-registered after the first registration on the day of registration or within the following seven days. This applies accordingly to short-term registrations with a registration period of up to 30, 60, 90 and 120 days. Daily registered cars are registered and de-registered within 24 hours.
In this context, the reporting month indicates the month in which de-registration was carried out. Only the first registration date and the de-registration date (=execution of de-registration done in insurances’ registrations offices) of a vehicle are crucial to be classified as "short-term registration".
