30.1% decrease in new passenger car registrations in August 2020

Vienna, 2020-09-09 – 20 906 new passenger cars were registered in August 2020, 30.1% less than in August of the previous year, as Statistics Austria reports. New registrations of petrol-driven passenger cars decreased by 42.4% (share: 44.5%), diesel-driven passenger cars by 32.4% (share: 36.8%). Increases were reported for petrol-hybrid drives (+80.0%; share: 9.9%), electric cars (+41.1%; share: 5.4%) and diesel-hybrid drives (+99.4%; share: 3.2%). The registrations of new motor vehicles declined by 22.5%; passenger cars accounted for 67.7% of total new vehicle registrations.

The following ten car makes recorded the highest number of new registrations: VW (share: 16.5%), Skoda (share: 7.3%), Ford (share: 6.4%), Mercedes and Hyundai (share: 6.3% each), Seat (share: 5.8%), BMW (share: 5.5%), Audi (share: 5.3%), Renault (share: 4.9%) and Opel (share: 4.4%). All mentioned Top 10 makes recorded double-digit declines between 11.7% and 41.3%.

The commercial vehicle market recorded more new registrations of lorries category (cat.) N3 (+16.4%) than in the same month last year. There were fewer new registrations of lorries cat. N2 (-37.2%), lorries cat. N1 (-18.8%), articulated lorries (-15.9%) and tractors used for agriculture and forestry (-7.1%).

More motorcycles (+28.3%) but fewer scooters (-2.9%) were registered for two-wheelers.

Current calendar year 2020: motor vehicles -27.8%; passenger cars -33.2%

In the period January to August 2020, new vehicle registrations fell by a total of 27.8% to 231 671. During the same period, new passenger car registrations decreased by 33.2% to 158 477; only cars with petrol hybrid drives (+92.7%), diesel hybrid drives (+65.6%) and electric drives (+9.1%) increased, while new registrations of petrol- and diesel-powered passenger cars decreased significantly (-43.8% and -33.9%).

VVO, in turn, receives data by the insurances’ registrations offices, responsible for registrations, de-registrations and rectifications of motor vehicles and trailers. 
Within motor vehicle statistics, all motor vehicles, once nationally or internationally registered, are levied, irrespective of the registration’s duration.
