Turnover in industry and construction decreased by 23.5% in May 2020; January to May 2020 -14.0%

Vienna, 2020-08-31 – A total of 66 317 enterprises in the entire industry and construction sector (+0.9% compared to the previous year) turned over €107.3 bn (-14.0%) in the reporting period January to May 2020, according to calculations by Statistics Austria. The working-day adjusted turnover for industry and construction decreased by 13.4%. These figures coupled with a decreasing employment (976 343 persons, -2.0%). In May 2020, turnover decreased by 23.5% compared to the same month of the previous year.

At establishment level (66 882 establishments, +0.9%), sold production decreased by 14.3% (working-day adjusted: -13.7%) in comparison to previous year's level and amounted to €105.6 bn in nominal terms (employing 975 848 persons, -2.0%). With €88.4 bn in nominal terms, industrial production sold fell by 15.8% compared to the previous year. Compared to the same month last year (May 2019), sold production declined by 23.7% in industry and construction.

The 36 482 Austrian construction establishments (+1.5%) achieved a production sold of €17.1 bn in the reporting period January to May 2020. This corresponds to a decrease of 5.4% in nominal terms (working-day adjusted: -4.7%) compared to the previous year.

At the end of May 2020, Austrian construction companies (not including construction auxiliary trades) had orders booked totalling about €16.4 bn (-3.9% year-over-year).
