Decreases in current tourism winter season 2019/20 due to lockdown in March

Vienna, 2020-04-28 – In March 2020, the number of nights spent in Austrian accommodation establishments fell by 58.9% and the number of arrivals even by 67.8%, according to preliminary data by Statistics Austria. In the current winter season 2019/20 (November 2019 to March 2020), the number of overnight stays decreased by 8.1% compared to the same period in the previous year to 59.39 million, while the arrivals declined by 9.9% to 15.85 million. As the ongoing tourism winter season still showed a positive trend until February 2020 (+7.2% in the number of nights spent), it is clear that the shutdown of a majority of the accommodation establishments in the second half of March 2020 had a massive impact on the winter season as a whole.

Expected decrease in arrivals and nights spent in March 2020

In March 2020, the number of nights spent decreased by 58.9% to 6.16 million. This means a reduction of 8.82 million compared to the result of March 2019 (14.98 million). The number of arrivals plummeted even more sharply by 67.8% to 1.29 million. This negative result is mainly caused by the measures taken against the COVID-19 pandemic, but a small part of the decrease was also due to the winter holiday shifts to February 2020 in important countries of origin like Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Easter holidays did not affect the result as they were scheduled in April in both 2019 and 2020.

The number of nights spent in the current calendar year 2020 (January to March) decreased accordingly by 12.7% to 41.93 million, the number of arrivals sunk by 16.4% to 9.90 million.For further information please refer to the German version.

Information on methods: Within the scope of the monthly overnight statistics, the arrivals and nights spent are provided by rented tourist accommodation establishments in communities with more than 1 000 nights spent per year. Thus, of the 2 095 Austrian communities, 1 566 reporting communities transmit data to Statistics Austria monthly. The survey units are commercial and private tourist accommodation establishments, which transmit their data to the relevant reporting community by means of "Statistisches Meldeblatt" or "Betriebsbogen" (for further information related to methodology see "Standarddokumentation".
The winter season considers the period November until April, the summer season the period May until October.
