85.1% of all students passed the standardised school-leaving examinations in summer 2019

Vienna, 2020-04-21 – In May 2018, 37 494 students from the school year 2018/19 had the admission to take the standardised school-leaving examinations qualifying for university attendance ("standardisierte Reife- und Diplomprüfung"). According to Statistics Austria, 85.1% of these students passed these final examinations. 12.7% failed at least one examination and 2.2% did not pass because of other reasons like illness. The success rate is almost equal at academic secondary schools (85.5%) and at technical and vocational colleges (84.8%), as is the rate for men (84.4%) and women (85.6%).

One year earlier, in summer 2018, 84.5% students passed the standardised school-leaving examinations. 13.5% of the students who had the admission to take the examinations failed at least one examination and 2.0% did not pass because of other reasons. Altogether 5 810 students did not pass the examinations on the first examination date. 10% (3 746) of the students, who were admitted on the first examination date in summer, passed the examinations on the second date in autumn. Further 2.2% (813) passed the examinations on the third date in winter. After three examination dates, the share of students who passed the final examinations rose up to approximately 96.6%.
