New passenger car registrations decreased by one third in the first quarter of 2020

Vienna, 2020-04-09 – In the first quarter of 2020, the number of new passenger car registrations (54 680) decreased by 32.4% compared to the same period in 2019, according to Statistics Austria. Although declines in new registrations were already reported in January (-9.1%) and February (-10.9%), the high quarterly decline is mainly attributable to March 2020 with a result of -66.7% due to the corona crisis.

Compared to the first quarter 2019, newly registered petrol-driven passenger cars (share: 46.1%) reported a decrease of 42.7%, those with diesel drive (share: 39.0%) as well (-32.3%). Among passenger cars with alternative drives, increases were recorded for petrol hybrids (+110.7%) and diesel hybrids (+82.5%), passenger cars powered by natural gas increased almost fourfold (+273.1%). The number of new electric car registrations decreased by 4.5% to 2 428.

The passenger car makes with the most new registrations were VW (share: 16.1%), Skoda (share: 9.7%) and Seat (share: 7.6%). All of the top 10 passenger car makes recorded double-digit declines compared to first quarter of 2019: Mercedes -10.0%, Hyundai -11.2%, BMW -14.3%, Skoda -24.9%, Audi -26.4%, Seat -29.3%, VW -37.5%, Renault -41.6%, Ford -45.8% und Opel -46.8%.

Fewer new motor vehicle registrations in total, except tractors used for agriculture and forestry

Motor vehicles in total reached 71 630 new registrations from January to March 2020. This figure marks a decrease of 31.7% in comparison with the same period in 2019. 76.3% of all new motor vehicle registrations were related to passenger cars.

The market for new commercial vehicles recorded increases for tractors used for agriculture and forestry (+5.8%). Fewer registrations were reported for articulated lorries (-40.5%), lorries category (cat.) N2 (-31.4%), lorries cat. N3 (-29.1%) and lorries cat. N1 (-25.8%). Among two-wheelers, less registrations for new scooters (-36.6%) and motorcycles (-44.3%) were registered.

Information on methods, definitions: Motor vehicle statistics (registrations of new and used vehicles as well as the stock of vehicles) are secondary statistics, compiled on the basis of daily data files sent to Statistics Austria by Austria’s association of insurance companies (VVO). VVO, in turn, receives data by the insurances’ registrations offices, responsible for registrations, de-registrations and rectifications of motor vehicles and trailers. 
Within motor vehicle statistics, all motor vehicles, once nationally or internationally registered, are levied, irrespective of the registration’s duration.
