European Statistical System (ESS)

The majority of the statistics compiled by STATISTICS AUSTRIA (also) serve the European Statistical System (ESS). The ESS comprises Eurostat and the statistical offices in the EU member states, as well as other national and European organisations that submit data to the ESS. The objective of the ESS is to provide comparable statistics at EU level. The ESS is designed as a network in which Eurostat’s role is to lead the way in the harmonisation of statistics in close cooperation with the national statistical authorities. Further information can be found at European Statistical System (ESS).

Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 March 2009 on European statistics

The individual statistics for the ESS are ruled in the first instance by specific EU legal instruments, with the Regulation (EC) No 223/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 March 2009 on European statistics forming the general normative framework and containing the fundamental principles for the compilation of European statistics.
